Extracurricular Activities
Student Council
The Student Council at SMS consists of 12 members—four students elected from each of the junior high grade levels. The SMS Junior High Student Council focuses on developing and improving the academic, social, and spiritual environment of the Junior High. Student Council members are positive role models who connect the student body to the faculty and the community to make for a positive, challenging, enjoyable, and compassionate school atmosphere.
Some of the activities that the Student Council plans are Junior High dances, sports nights (including dodgeball and floor hockey tournaments), fund-raisers for service projects, and theme activities like Casino Night or Movie Night.
The Student Council Advisor is Chris Smith. For more information about the Student Council at SMS, please contact Chris Smith at 507 446-2300 or e-mail him at csmith@stmarys-owatonna.org
Drama
Two full-length theater productions are presented each year at St. Mary’s School. The fall play is usually open to students in grades 4-6, and the spring play is for seventh and eighth graders. Students rehearse after school for about 6-8 weeks prior to each production. Students also help with the design and production of the set as well as lighting and props during the production.
For more information about drama and plays at St. Mary’s, contact Stacey Mulet at smulet3@charter.net
Scouting
Many different Cub Scout, Girl Scout and Brownie troops made up of St. Mary’s students meet regularly after school and in the evenings at St. Mary’s.
For information on Cub Scouts at St. Mary’s contact Eric Tucker, the Pack leader at Pack354@gmail.com
Cribbage
Cribbage is offered once a week after school for third, fourth and fifth graders during the winter months. Community volunteers form small groups with the students to teach them the basics of the game. The children have fun learning the game while developing their math skills. A fun, friendly tournament caps off the season in February. For more information on cribbage at St. Mary’s, contact volunteercoord@stmarys-owatonna.org or call 446-2300
Safety Patrol
Fifth graders at SMS have the opportunity to act as leaders and role models for younger children in the role of safety patrol. The students act as crossing guards both before and after school. Training for this program is provided through the Minnesota Department of Transportation and follows their specific guidelines.
