Lunch

St. Mary’s School provides a hot lunch daily in accordance with the state and federal guidelines. Lunches are prepared on site by our kitchen staff.  Menus for the upcoming month will be sent home in the news letter and are also available to view online in the calendar section.

Lunchroom behavior expectations are as follows:

  • Follow directions given by the supervisor
  • Use good table manners (hats off, use an indoor voice, clean up your area)
  • Dispose of all trash as directed

Lunch costs are as follows:

K-5  $1.60 per lunch ($8.00/week) (a single milk is included in this cost)
6-8  $1.70 per lunch ($8.50/week) (a single milk is included in this cost)

Extra milk is 20 cents each
Milk choices daily: White Skim, White 2%, Chocolate 1%

Transportation/Busing

Bus Service is provided to and from St. Mary’s as a free service by the Owatonna Bus Company to students living more than two miles from St. Mary’s. Schedules for bus pickup and drop off times are mailed to each family in late August. Anyone new to the school or requesting a change in drop-off or pick-up location, should contact Katy at the Owatonna Bus Company at 507 451-5262.

Library

St Mary’s School library is staffed by a licensed media specialist with a master’s degree in Library Media Education. St. Mary’s is committed to building a collection that supports the curriculum while offering high-interest material to all readers.  It is the intent of the library to serve as the hub of intellectual activity at our school ensuring that students and staff are effective users of ideas in information.  The library programs support and enrich the curriculum, incorporate state and national standards, and provide students with the skills necessary to seek and evaluate information, develop a love of literature, nurture a love of reading, and become lifelong learners.

Counseling

St. Mary’s offers a variety of counseling services to students and families provided by Gina Pohlen. Mrs. Pohlen meets with students individually as well as in small groups. She is available to meet with parents on an as needed basis. 

Throughout the year, the counseling service offers classroom presentations and facilitates small group discussions on a variety of social topics including friendship, drug and alcohol education, self-image, advertising, anger management, assertiveness training and conflict resolving skills, and communication.

Nurse/Wellness Office

Mary Herzog, RN staffs the St. Mary’s Nurse/Wellness office. “Miss Mary” plans wellness programs throughout the year for students and staff. She also cares for students when they become ill at school.

Vision and hearing screening is a service provided for each student at the beginning of each school year.

Medication Guidelines

  1. All medications taken by students during school hours must adhere to the following guidelines
  2. Only a licensed school nurse, registered nurse, principal or teacher may administer medication to a student during school hours unless the parent/guardian comes to the school to administer the medication.
  3. Medication may be administered only according to the written order of a physician and written authorization of the parent/guardian.
  4. The medication to be administered must be brought to school in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacy or physician.
  5. A licensed school nurse or registered nurse may administer medications that are not taken orally or that have some dangerous side effects only.
  6. All medications should be kept in a locked place.
  7. Aspirin and similar over-the-counter medications should be considered the same as prescription medications.
  8. Students may not self-administer medications.
